Lithium Ion - Dominating the Secondary Battery Industry

Two major battery market segments exist - Primary and secondary batteries.  Primary batteries can only be used one time.  Once their chemistry releases its energy, they must be discarded.  This segment is dominated today by alkaline cells.  Secondary batteries are capable of storing and releasing energy multiple times, commonly called rechargable batteries.

The Li-ion chemistry was invented in the 1960s but the first commercial lithium ion battery was released by Sony in 1991.  Since then, the adoption of lithium ion batteries has grown steadily.  Today, Li-ion chemistries represent to majority of all rechargable battery shipments.  Li-ion has become the chemistry of choice for portable consumer electronics applications due to its best in class energy density figures, its incredible ability to deliver consistent power throughout the discharge cycle, no memory effect and a very slow loss of charge (self-discharge) when not in use.  It is estimated that ~140 Million Li-ion cells are being manufactured each month to support these market segments.
