Battery Management -
Boundless' intellectual property and value add in the Li-ion game resides in
our integrated Battery Management System (BMS). Our unique designs utilize the
same fundamental concepts to ensure safe, long-term reliable use of Li-ion cells in
the delivery of power for a wide range of applications. Each application provides its
own set of challenges and our BMS has proven to be very adaptable and robust
giving us the ability to meet almost any need with one of our two BMS
architectures.
Long Term Cell Life -
Boundless' experience with Li-ion energy storage began with the chemistry's use in mission critical space applications. Maximizing cell life is a key design criteria in space sub-systems due to the extremely high costs for a replacement service call. Our designs treat the cells in a manner which carefully balances the give and take of cell life and maximizes deliverable energy.
The Balancing Game -
Boundless' proprietary algorithms insure that voltages are kept "balanced" through time as well as to ensure that the pack can drive itself into balance during the charge cycle. Balancing is done at the Block level (a block is from 1 to n cells connected in parallel). The Pack Design's Master Controller and the Stand-Alone's Central Controller are also able to "balance" the systems at a higher level.
Protection from User Environment -
Lithium Ion battery chemistry inherently requires more "care and feeding" than the Lead Acid sub-systems they are typically replacing. Another critical Battery Management System function is the protect the cells and the battery from end-user neglect. Charge and discharge voltages are carefully monitored and actions are taken to protect the cells. Lead-Acid batteries are not typically able to shut themselves off. This requires a slight End-User familiarity and understanding...Li-ion is not a simple drop in for Lead Acid batteries. The BMS protects the user and the cells/
